Checkpoint Graz: Protest und Repression
Report from Graz - English summary / Reportaggio di Graz: sommario italiano

Checkpoint Austria in Graz.

Report from Graz - English summary:

5.12.2000 Checkpoint Graz: protest and repression
- 8 out of 10 protests forbid
- massive police detachment against non-violent blockade efforts
- threats: "Watch out, if I meet you alone in the street, you'll have a bullet in your head!"
- protesters taken in by police, several charges
- before that: police "visits" in student dorms

Authorities in Graz have done everything in their hands to prevent
Checkpoint Austria - the blockade of roads all over the country against the passing of the federal budget.
Most protests, that is eight out of ten, have been prohibited, police was not prepared to envolve in any negotiations, only two blockades were allowed to be carried out.
In order to threaten the organizers, mostly students at the local university, state police showed up before the
protests in the private homes of the activists and their families. Even in the university area police stopped people who were putting up posters and threatened to charge them for the alleged damage done. Via the press, heavy action was announced if the Checkpoints were to be carried out as planned, and unfortunately implemented by eviction, taking in of activists, and charges.

Despite the prohibitions and threats, about 100 people gathered on Europaplatz at 6 a.m. in order to block the junction as a means of protest against cuts in the social and education systems. They were met by at least 100 to 150 police men. When they sat down on the ground, they were brutally removed without prior warning.
During the police action, a van of Checkpoint Graz was able to get on the junction and to confuse the police so much that they were unable to take in the organizers as they had announced. The music equippment it carried was turned down, keys and ID were taken away from the lorry driver, who was threatened with a charge.
One plain cloth police man threatened an activist with the words: "Watch out, if I meet you alone in the street, you'll have a bullet in your head!" ´(pics: www.blubb.at/mayday ).
Even one plain cloth policeman was attacked before he could justify himself with the words: "But I am a collugue!" Charges and arrests were continuously announced by the police man in charge, Dr. Lecker, but it remained unclear who and what excactly was meant - several charges are to be anticipated.
The activists who continued their protest rally, were pushed together on the sidewalk and charged for accidentally stepping down on the road.

After the permitted Checkpoint at Lazarettgasse / Elisabethinergasse, massive police detachment was able to prevent a spontanuous rally in Rösslmühlgasse, but not a sit-in on Griesplatz. When a specail unit approached the singing activists with batons, the blockade was interrupted. On the other permitted checkpoint on Radetzkyspitz, protesters even had to block the junction themselves due to ignorant and counter-productive police actions. Another sit-in was removed on Andreas-Hofer-Platz.

Vis-a-vis the press, police action was played down. As opposed to police reports, who claim that only 50 police men were involved and that there were no charges, the organizers claim to have film coverage that gives evidence to their version.
